Background introduction of plastic degradation performance test

Mar 26, 2025

my country is one of the top ten plastic products production and consumption countries in the world, and contributes about 25% of the global plastic production and use. "White pollution" is becoming more and more serious. Solving "white pollution" is also a key national policy. On December 31, 2007, the State Council promulgated the "Notice on Restricting the Production and Sale of Plastic Shopping Bags" (hereinafter referred to as the "Notice"). Since then, the plastic restriction order has been officially raised from a local pilot to the national level. In 2020, the state successively issued the "Opinions on Further Strengthening the Control of Plastic Pollution" and the "Notice on Promoting the Control of Plastic Pollution" (commonly known as "Plastics Ban Order") to prohibit and restrict the use of plastic products. According to the data, the "Opinions on Further Strengthening the Control of Plastic Pollution" issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, its main goal is to take the lead in banning and restricting the production and sales of some plastic products in some regions and areas by 2020 and use. By 2022, the consumption of single-use plastic products will be significantly reduced, alternative products will be promoted, and the proportion of plastic waste recycling and energy utilization will be greatly increased; in the prominent areas of plastic pollution and emerging areas such as e-commerce, express delivery, and takeaway, a group will be formed. Reproducible and extendable plastic reduction and green logistics model. By 2025, the management system for the production, circulation, consumption, recycling and disposal of plastic products will be basically established, a multi-element co-governance system will be basically formed, the development and application of alternative products will be further improved, the amount of plastic waste landfilled in key cities will be greatly reduced, and plastic pollution will be reduced. Effective control. In response to national policies, more than 30 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country have successively issued provincial-level implementation plans to further improve plastic pollution control.

In this "strongest version of the plastic restriction order", the most important one is: (5) Prohibited and restricted plastic products. That is, the use of non-degradable plastic bags, disposable plastic tableware, disposable plastic products in hotels and hotels, and express plastic packaging are prohibited and restricted within the specified time limit. Biodegradable plastics are ushering in new opportunities for development. It is understood that the market capacity of biodegradable plastics in my country is 42,000 tons. After the "plastic limit order" is fully implemented, the demand for food delivery, express delivery, and agricultural film alone will reach 1.5453 million tons, corresponding to about 27 billion yuan in the biodegradable plastic market. Under both policies and the market, the biodegradable plastics industry has a huge market space. The nationwide ban on plastics promoted by China this time will stimulate the steady growth of domestic demand for biodegradable plastics. By 2025, the demand for biodegradable plastics in China is expected to be 2.38 million tons, and the market size can reach 47.7 billion yuan; by 2030, the demand is expected to be 4.28 million tons and the market size can reach 85.5 billion yuan.

The society's ardent expectations for degradable materials have entered a fever pitch. How to define, terminology and requirements for degradable plastics is extremely important for the healthy development of degradable plastics and market supervision. Along with the degradation definition, terminology and degradation performance requirements, the test of the degradation performance of plastics is followed by the test data. The degradation performance of the plastics can be quantitatively analyzed through the test data, so as to better define whether the plastic is degradable or not, and to assist the relevant departments. Cooperate better with national and local law enforcement requirements. So what kind of plastic is degradable plastic? According to the "General Rules for the Selection of Degradable Materials and Products and the Selection of Inspection Methods", the draft for comments stated: Degradable plastics are under natural conditions such as soil and/or sand, or under specific conditions such as composting conditions or anaerobic digestion conditions. In the aqueous culture medium, degradation is caused by the action of microorganisms in nature, such as bacteria, molds and seaweeds, and finally completely degrades into carbon dioxide (CO2) or/and methane, water (H2O) and mineralized inorganic salts of the elements contained in it. And a new type of biomass plastic. Since degradation is a broad concept, to judge whether it is degradation, it is also necessary to see whether its degradation products really have an adverse effect on the environment. Therefore, when a plastic claims to be degradation, it should clarify the degradation conditions and clarify its standard degradation test methods. .

Degradable plastic testing is a very important link in the implementation of this "plastic ban". However, the plastic degradation test itself has a long cycle and greater difficulty, and the domestic testing system is in its infancy in the testing capabilities of this project. Therefore, to improve the detection capability of this detection system is currently the most important task. In order to improve the accuracy of the degradation test, shorten the test cycle, and reduce the difficulty of the test, many degradable performance test instruments have emerged. What is a suitable one? What about the degradation performance test instrument? First, the instrument must strictly follow the requirements of the standard, especially the requirements of many details involved in the standard. At the same time, the basic test requirements of the accuracy and repeatability of the data must be considered. In addition, because the test cycle is very long , Choose automated equipment as much as possible to avoid errors caused by the intensity of manual operation and human factors. Only through comprehensive inspection of all aspects can you choose an instrument that is more suitable for testing. Among many equipment manufacturers, DKR-DA18 is biodegradable The testing system is currently one of the most representative degradation performance testing instruments. In addition to meeting the above-mentioned requirements, it can also achieve high-efficiency testing. It has received very good evaluations among existing users.

Although the current domestic detection system's understanding of plastic degradation performance and detection capabilities are not perfect, the author believes that with the domestic detection system capabilities, the capability and efficiency of degradation performance testing will surely be quickly improved, in line with the implementation of national policies.

Bamboo fiber + bagasse! Create the perfect degradable tableware: Low-cost, high-strength, hydrophobic and oil-resistant, half degraded in 2 months!

Disposable tableware has brought convenience to people's lives, especially with the development of the takeaway industry, the number of people's consumption of disposable tableware has surged. An environmental protection organization has conducted statistics on the amount of disposable tableware consumed by China's online food delivery platforms, and found that on average, 3.27 disposable plastic tableware will be consumed for each takeout order, so these platforms will consume nearly 80 million pieces of tableware every day, not including other platforms. and the consumption of traditional catering stores. From a global perspective, the world consumes about 16 billion disposable coffee cups every year, and discards 1 billion plastic straws every day. Such a huge consumption causes about 8 million tons of plastic waste to flow into the ocean every year. Conservative estimates of these plastic wastes are also It takes 450 years to degrade.

The research group of Zhu Hongli from Northeastern University blended short bagasse fibers with long bamboo fibers, and the two fibers were physically intertwined to form a highly intertwined network structure, and then the disposable tableware was prepared by cold pressing and hot pressing drying. It can completely replace plastic and traditional paper tableware.

Through electron microscopy, the researchers found that the melting of lignin in the hot-pressed fibers and the hydrogen bonding between the cellulose make the fibers tightly bonded together to form a 3D network, which improves the water resistance and strength of the product.

To study the biodegradability of tableware, the researchers buried them in soil and regularly checked for changes in shape and weight. It was found that after 20 days of burial, yellow fungi appeared on the surface of the tableware, began to deform after 30-45 days, and completely lost its shape and gradually disappeared after 60 days. And the weight of the cup dropped from 7.99 g to 4.18 g after 60 days, almost half of the degradation. In contrast, the polystyrene (PS) plastic tableware used as a comparison showed no change in appearance or shape after being embedded for 60 days.

Since it is used as tableware, it is necessary to ensure its safety first, especially the content of heavy metals such as Pb and As should not exceed the standard. According to European Food Contact Materials Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 and China National Food Safety Standard (Food Contact Paper and Cardboard Materials and Their Products) GB 4806.8-2016, 23, 24 The content of Pb and As should be lower than 3.0 mg/kg and 1.0 mg/kg. The researchers used inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) to analyze the content of Pb and As in the mixed fiber tableware, and found that the content of Pb was 0.3633 mg/kg, only 1/8 of the standard value, and no As was detected. exist.

As tableware, oil resistance and water resistance are also critical. The contact angle of mixed fiber tableware to water reaches 127°, the contact angle of secondary fiber forming pulp SFMP and filter paper to water is 0°, and the commercial bagasse tableware is 93°. The mixed fiber material shows excellent hydrophobicity. Not only that, the water absorption of mixed fiber tableware is only 59.4%, while the commercial bagasse tableware is 77.5%, filter paper is 149.2%, and SFMP is 310%. Such low water absorption is due to the high hydrophobicity and dense structure of the mixed fiber. of.

In order to evaluate the oil resistance of tableware, the researchers analyzed according to the standard of Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) 559 pm-96, and found that the oil resistance of mixed fiber tableware is 6, which is much higher than that of SFMP (1), commercial bagasse Cutlery (grade 4) and filter paper (grade 1), exhibiting excellent oil resistance.

The researchers compared the mechanical properties of the mixed fiber and PS tableware and found that the tensile strength was 35.0 MPa, which was at least 2 times higher than that of the PS plastic cup (15.6 MPa), and the Young's modulus was 3.25 GPa, which was much higher than that of the PS plastic cup of 1.40. GPa. A 7.9-gram mixed fiber paper cup can support a weight of 3 kilograms and still maintain its shape, a load that is 380 times its own weight.

97% lower CO2 emissions than plastic

The researchers estimated the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during the production of mixed fiber tableware. According to reports, the carbon dioxide emission of 1 kg of foamed PS plastic is 7.36 kg; according to the statistics of the European carton board manufacturers association (Pro-Carton), the emission of 1 kg of molded pulp products is 0.22 kg. As a result, the CO2 emissions of molded mixed fiber tableware are 97% lower than PS tableware and 65% lower than disposable paper and PLA plastic tableware.

Cost close to PS tableware

In addition to good performance, the material must be cheap to be king. By comparing the statistics from the Plastics Insight-Market Intelligence website, the researchers found that the cost of mixed fiber tableware was US$2,333/ton, which was only half that of PLA (US$4,750/ton) and close to that of PS tableware (US$2,177/ton).

In order to solve the increasingly serious problem of "white pollution", Zhu Hongli's research group from Northeastern University blended bamboo fiber and bagasse fiber → cold pressing → hot pressing to prepare a tableware that can be quickly degraded, which only takes 60 days. Degradation 48%; Pb content in tableware is 0.3633 mg/kg, only 1/8 of the standard; excellent water and oil resistance; tensile strength is 35.0 MPa, Young's modulus is 3.25 GPa, much higher than PS Plastic cup; the CO2 emission of producing 1 kg of product is 0.22 kg, which is 97% lower than that of PS tableware, and the cost is only US$2,333/ton, which is close to that of PS tableware (US$2,177/ton). From the comparative analysis of seven aspects of safety, odor, CO2 emission, cost, biodegradation, abundance and processability, it is not difficult to see that compared with other materials, the tableware made of this mixed fiber material is comparable in all aspects. Said to be perfect, if mass production is achieved, the solution of the world's "white pollution" problem is just around the corner.
